Level II Machine Lubricant Analyst
Purpose
The purpose for the Level II Machine Lubricant Analyst (MLA II) certification is to verify that technicians practicing in the field of lube oil analysis, as it is applied to machinery condition monitoring and maintenance, are qualified to perform the following tasks

  • Design an oil analysis program, including selecting tests, setting targets, alarms and limits, determining test frequency and assign machine-specific sampling methods.
  • Diagnose abnormal machine and lubricant conditions to make or advise appropriate decisions and oversee implementation.
  • Understand and communicate to managers, supervisors and lube technicians, the role of lubricant analysis in a Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) program.
  • Deploy proactive lubrication monitoring to reduce component failure rate and extend machine life.
  • Manage lubricant analysis information and associated software programs.
  • Evaluate the performance of outside oil analysis services and make corrective changes where required.
  • Use oil analysis to assure lubricant supplier quality conformance.
  • Develop, deploy and manage procedures for lubricant sampling and analysis.
  • Select on-site oil analysis instruments as required.
  • Work within a multi-technology machine condition-monitoring program and facilitate synergistic integration.
  • Financially rationalize the lubricant analysis program.
  • Provide training, guidance and support to the organization and to those individuals who are seeking MLA certification.
  • Document the contributions oil analysis makes to the organization.

Common job titles for the individual who would become Level II MLA certified include Lubrication Technician or Engineer, PM or PDM Technician, Engineer or Manager, Reliability Technician Engineer or Manager, Maintenance Technician or Engineer, etc. Generally, this individual manages the lubricant analysis program and/or serves as a senior diagnostician. The individual is likely to be involved with troubleshooting tough problems identified by routine analysis and inspections. The Level II MLA certified individual is likely to supervise and/or support Level I MLA certified individuals.
