Level I Laboratory Lubricant Analyst
Purpose
The purpose for the Level I Laboratory Lubricant Analyst (LLA) certification is to verify that laboratory personnel from both commercial oil analysis labs and private in-house labs practicing in the field of lube oil analysis as it is applied to machinery condition monitoring and maintenance, are qualified to perform the following tasks:

Receive, handle and prepare samples for lube oil analysis to ensure the integrity of the sample and the accuracy of subsequent tests data.

  • Select appropriate tests for diagnosing common machine lubrication problem conditions as they relate to machine wear, lubricant condition and lubricant contamination.
  • Conduct and run appropriate lube oil analysis tests according to appropriate standards (ISO, ASTM etc.).
  • Interpret oil analysis test data to identify and determine abnormal machine wear conditions.
  • Interpret oil analysis test data to identify and determine conditions of wrong or degraded lubricant.
  • Interpret oil analysis test data to identify and determine contaminated lubricant conditions.

Common job titles for the individual who would become Level I LLA certified include Lab Technician, Lube Analyst, etc. Generally, this individual is regularly involved with receiving lube oil samples for lab analysis, running lube oil analysis tests and interpreting oil analysis test data. The individual is likely to be directly involved in all aspects of running lab analysis as well as providing basic advice and recommendations to end user practitioners of oil analysis. As such, a basic understanding of machinery lubrication, contamination control and machinery maintenance are required.
